During reading and writing last week we looked at how to read and write instructions. Some of us wrote instructions about how to make shoes to walk in, others wrote about a flying machines for aliens to fly and others discovered how to make a double waka. It was great! To complete our work we then followed our own instructions or the instructions of others to make something. Here is a look what we were doing.

Let's Experiment!
For Topic we are part of an interchange with some of of the other classes in the Middle Syndicate. So far we have conducted experiments that taught us about flowing lava. We discovered that the correct term for the thickness of a liquid is viscosity. (I know cool right!) We also discussed how temperature has an effect on substances, turning something that is solid such as rock into something that is a liquid -lava. We were very interested and the discussion was fabulous! Here are some photos to show what we were doing.
Some of us may or may not have tasted the margarine.........;-)
Bit of a big update....so much has happened!
Dr. Chris Gomez
Dr.Chris Gomez - Canterbury University
We were lucky enough to have volcanologist Dr. Chris Gomez come and speak to the middle syndicate about his job and many adventures he has had whilst studying volcanoes!

Here are some pictures from his talk - we also had many questions to ask him. We came away with so much information about Volcanoes!

A nut free zone...
No nuts please...
Dear Parents and Caregivers,Room 18 is a nut free zone.
Please keep this in mind when bringing these products to school, as we have two students in Room 18 who are really allergic to nuts. We have talked about this in class and as a reminder we will have a sign on the door.
Many thanks,
Belinda

We are the Caretakers!
During our first week Room 18 become caretakers of their environment. They did an amazing job of tidying up the Bee and Butterfly garden. We have also started discussing creating a new garden opposite our classroom. We are thinking some new raised beds and beautiful art work to create a space worth looking after.
Taking a Chance
For Maths we have been learning about Probability. Our first task was to talk about what probability/chance was. We discovered it was a bit different to being given a chance when we did something wrong. We then looked at the chance of flipping a head or tails on a coin. We also discussed the outcomes when we flipped the coin 30 times. Our results were very interesting.
